No, he didn't open up the Americas for European colonization first. His efforts were repelled and whatever few settlements existed quickly vanished. And, after his failure, the knowledge wasn't even spread in Europe.

Oh? Then why didn't Europe know about it by the time Columbus set out? For discoveries to matter, that information needs to be shared. Thereby the person to DOCUMENT something first is what really matters.
