I really don't think he had much to do with it.

His presidency came just as social media exploded and online political movements started to boom. The 24 hour news cycle got increasingly worse during this period and began to involve aforementioned social media.

The widening access of opinion simply made public things people had been thinking for years but didn't get a ton of exposure for. Merge this with modern "pls give me a news story I don't care what it is" media that lacks journalistic integrity and you get a sharp political divide that's more public than ever.

Any race-involved statements made by any president will cause a shitstorm now because some insane opinion will become widely known due to social media/news media and a substanceless debate will spark around it leaving everybody bitter and angry.

obama was pretty spineless and a pretty incompetent president overall but I don't think it's a coincidence that political opinions and the venom surrounding them progressively went off the rails the more facebook/twitter got popular
