Parents frequently are uncomfortable with male elementary school teachers, especially with younger students.

I had a male teacher in 2nd, 4th, 5th grade and they were most of my favorite teachers (my favorite teacher was in my highly capable (Hi-Cap) class and she was a woman, however).

Students don't have a problem with teachers based on gender, but you'd be surprised how many parents are uncomfortable letting an adult man supervise their child for good chunk of the year. And again, it's exponentially more pronounced the younger the child.
