I dunno man, putting aside the whole conversation on people acting tough or being drunks or whatever, I'm just surprised that you wouldn't be able to taste the difference between a dark liquor that has a distinct raisin molasses taste (like rum) versus a clear spirit like gin which tastes of pine and juniper.
