Manning leaving was the straw that broke the camels back for a ton of people.

i don't think one player leaving in a league with a bunch of star players actually affects ratings that much

It does. It's just like the NBA with Jordan in 99 trying to blame the lock out and every other reason.

Especially in the case of the NFL. The NBA at least had Ewing and Barkley who were comparable to being known like Jordan. (Though not in the same stratosphere) And a bevy of upcoming super talented stars on the horizon. The NFL has none of that.

The next most recognizable after Peyton was Rodgers, who mind you, was leagues behind him AND rubs some people the wrong way (I don't know why, but he does) and then a huge way down from Rodgers is his brother from osmosis, and then someone everyone hates. Losing the face of your league is crippling. And there are no young talented superstars like NBA 99 to look forward too.

When Brees, Rodgers, Eli, Big Ben and Brady* all retire in the next few years who is the face of the league? Russel Wilson...?

If Wilson is the face of the league you are already dead. But there aren't any ultra talented young kids with charmisma and personality to take over.
