The kid themselves aside, the simple fact that the woman has a kid at all makes her come off as older and less available.
Some dudes want to feel young. Child raising comes off as a middle-age activity. A woman with a child is more likely to be looking towards things like marriage that are too much pressure for some dudes to think about at all.
And dudes like to chill and have fun. A mother is stuck with responsibilities that hurt one's ability to do that. Her schedule won't be as free. You can't be the only person in her life if she has a kid, meaning you miss out on a common stage of dating (the portion of the relationship where it's just you two, and everyone else is secondary).
So basically the kid is a problem even if you never run into him/her yourself.

Ohh, so it's actually that you don't want to be in an adult relationship, you want her to be the adult in the relationship, and another child there is competition for the attention you want. (I know that's not what you said, but that's what it sounds like)
Sounds more like he doesn't want play daddy to a kid that isn't his but then get emotionally attached. You can actually find an adult relationship without dealing with single moms. ---
