It feels soft and crunchy beneath your boot. When you dig your hand into it, it's not only chilling cold, enough to be wearing gloves, it's nearly as soft as beech sand. When you compress just enough of it between your gloved hands, it is like the crushed ice from a cone, but you feel more aware and inclined of other possibilities, great and terrible at once, as to whom or what you can throw it at; the would-be cold treat is now your single-use superpower and projectile. When a snowball hits you, just one, it is like a softball-sized hacky sack beating against your coat, your only armor against what you know will be even more such attacks. Then, as the snowball collapses upon impact, you feel the glee and madness calling you to pick up the next snowball and return the favor on ANYTHING THAT MOVES.

Finally, after being hit by so many snowballs, lying down in the snow amidst your madness to emulate angel wings, or even marching through the depths of soft ice for so long, you head inside and feel so, so cold . . . but everything else burns and also feels so good.

That is snow.

When you first experience it, it is your love in life. When you experience so much of it and have to regularly cross town in it, it is your bane.
