Actually making movies is one of the least efficient ways of making money off a movie franchise. Action figures, LEGO sets, trading cards, phone cases, and countless other random trash are where you make money and that's where Star Wars has been killing it for decades. What allowed Pokemon to do so well is that it is absurdly popular in Asia. Star Wars is quite popular in Japan but I don't think it has much truck anywhere else.
