He doesn't drop them and have a chance to pick them back up, they're just gone. They saved that just for hedgehog avatars. It leads to a weird situation during boss fights, where it's actually better to leave rings onscreen uncollected so you have something to pick up when you get hit. But the regular levels, especially the Modern Sonic ones, are excellent. I wish they'd stop having these other characters, even Classic Sonic, and just make Colors 2 where it's all Modern Sonic.
