I feel like RE4 gets disrespected in the difficulty department because it's SO damn good that half the internet has it memorized. I thought it was tough as hell back in 2005. I even found the HD release on the 360 challenging (in Professional mode) because by that point, I had been coddled by the Wii version's control scheme.

5-1, 5-2, and 5-4 are the 3 longest levels in the game probably.
4-1 has gotta be up there. It's like an action flick in and of itself.
Anyway, some tipz:
- From chapter 3 onward, shooting enemies in the knee/shin gets you the suplex QTE (the "tell" is if an enemy drops to their knees for a second). This is highly damaging and has a chance for an insta-kill. Most people prefer this QTE because it looks badass and because it's the only regular attack in the game which can kill while also assuring that a plagas parasite won't pop out of the enemy. However, if can leave you vulnerable, as Leon only attacks one enemy and then stands up while potentially getting flanked by others ready to attack him.
- On the other hand, shooting an enemy in the face gets you the roundhouse kick QTE (the "tell" is if an enemy grabs their face in pain while staggering). I prefer this QTE because it has an AoE spread - if you cleverly position the enemies, Leon can kick like four of em at a time.
- All QTE attacks/actions make Leon invincible. If you initiate the kick/suplex, all attacks against Leon will be ignored by the game until the QTE animations are completed. This allows for some really aggressive gameplay, as you can shoot one enemy in the face, then rush up to him and throw a kick regardless of how many enemies are around him.
- For weapons with rarer ammo (magnums, rifles), it's advisable to use up your clip, and then instead of reloading... upgrade the capacity instead. It maxes out your capacity for free, which makes Magnums especially broken.
- You can get a free magnum in the game. Keep your eyes open for it.
- Always buy the treasure maps. Also, I believe the largest carrying case can be picked up in 3-3. Buy it asap.
- Enjoy one of the best games ever made.
