The only way to buy heroes is with credits (in-game currency). You cannot get heroes in lootboxes.
You can buy lootboxes with credits or crystals (premium currency).

Lootboxes and credits can also be earned via in-game challenges, completing the campaign, doing the arcade missions, etc. The challenges seem to refresh on a weekly rotation and there will be unique ones involving DLC seasons.
No idea if crystals can be earned in-game or if they're purely a way to buy with cash.

Inside lootboxes are weapons, craft parts, and star cards.
Weapons are self-explanatory.
Craft parts can be used to make star cards or weapon mods (other way to get mods is via weapon challenges).
Star Cards have various boosts of different levels (common, uncommon, rare, epic -- epic is not found in lootboxes at all and must be crafted). Star Cards affect a variety of things (side-grades on the different abilities, improvements of the abilities, increase health, earn extra points based off of the class such as they heavy earning extra points for being hit, etc.)

Classes, ships, and heroes all have star cards. While all of the star cards have mathematical improvements over lesser versions, they aren't that significant. Luck and skill still plays the most important role in who would win between two players.
