Here's the thing: I don't even entirely blame them half the time. It's not a matter of them being stupid, it's just being careless because there's so much information flying at any given moment and people just don't bother fact-checking. (Which, of course, is also why fake news is rampant despite living in an area where it's probably easier than ever to verify many claims.) If you see somebody you trust passing along a bit of information you can believe, many people would be inclined to believe it.
