I have seen marijuana promoted as a panacea for virtually every ailment under the sun. Hell, someone once suggested that I try it to cure my asthma (when I pointed out that smoking something to cure a lung affliction was probably a bad idea, they answered with a shrug and said "You won't know until you try").

Similarly, the vast majority of patients taking medical marijuana are taking it for vague, difficult-to-verify conditions like "chronic pain". I'm not saying they're all faking it, but it's pretty clear a pretty significant proportion of them are because they'd like to smoke up without facing the risk of being arrested.

And that's what really bothers me about the marijuana movement: the dishonesty that gets used (and, as previously mentioned, this used to be a calling-card of the anti-drug hysterics so you'd expect the marijuana proponents to be aware of just how dumb it is). There's one argument that - while I disagree with it in terms of cost-benefit analysis - is also one I can respect and seldom object to, and that's simple honesty: "I'd like to be able to toke up and not worry about the cops busting down my door to toss me in prison and take my kids." That, to me, is probably the strongest argument in favour of legalization, not all these bullshit claims supported only by hokum science about how it cures cancer and raises alertness and is impossible to be addicted to and is a superior substitute for rope.
