Grant Morrison says in continuity that his character has met him in reality (outside of fiction) and that he will write his character to the benefit of the character. Grant Morrison was at the time the only writer of Animal Man, and Deus Ex Machina is where reality warped around Animal Man for his own benefit thanks to Morrison's writing in the real world DC Comics offices. Essentially, it's plot armor from the world you and I actually live in.
