If its a lot, then theyd have to actually make a pretty lengthy arcade-style story mode at the least, or something like 012 at the most. They probably didnt feel like doing that and figured theyd implement the same idea (fighting gets you story) without actually chaining it to one mode that dictates how you play it. Its an interesting idea.
