I would definitely play the short game for maximum profits. But to be perfectly honest due to the unstable and slightly asinine rate of inflation, right now, it doesn't seem worth investing in if you didn't do so in the early years.

I disagree... I do not think this is a good "long-term" relationship, as in "set it and forget it".
