We treat them more akin to family; as far as the human-pet relationship can define that. That means we care for our pet's physiological needs. We are attentive to their needs (and sometimes their whims), show affection and gauge their moods. Animals, to a certain extent, resemble humans too. They feel and are subject to mood swings. They probably can feel basic emotions too.
