That's right, no rationale for letting anyone die in a fire is ever going to be acceptable to me. I feel like that's a fairly reasonable position to be uncompromising on.

Mostly, ol' Frankie's rocking the boat and a bunch of more conservative Christians don't like him much as a result. Because apparently papal infallibility stops being a thing when you don't like what the pope says. But those are the sorts of people for whom going to church is a self-righteous circle jerk, who aren't actually interested in letting religious practice challenge them in any way, so it's kind of a given that they aren't the best source of information on the matter.
