They're just doing what they attempted to do back in the N64 years but people were too stupid or dense to understand.

Basically, they're "soft rebooting" the series.

This happened with most of their series during the N64 era.

Super Mario 64 (and consequently, all future 3D Marios) don't really have much of a connection with the NES/SNES/Gameboy 2D Marios.

Star Fox 64 was a straight up reboot of Star Fox from SNES.

And Ocarina of Time was basically a "starting over" for Zelda, which was made abundantly clear when they created the timeline and the NES/SNES/Gameboy Zeldas were literally made non canon through being part of some goofy "Link died lol" timeline.

Basically, everyone tries to come up with some sort of linear canon timeline when Nintendo never really had any intention of this and always wanted there to be specific "eras" or "versions" of their series (although I'd argue this is starting to get abandoned with Mario or has always been murkey with Mario, there's clearly a distinct difference between "2D Mario" and "3D Mario" and even "RPG Mario" and "Paper Mario")

In the same way, there was supposed to be a break between top down Zelda and 3D Zelda.

And now there doing it again with Open World Zelda.
