When a free society has rules to prevent the people in power from abusing that power outright, the most effective circumvention is to divide the people and convince them to do what you want for you. Government can't legally censor you, but a pack of self-righteous, head-up-their-own-ass rabid citizens can. Can't legally use violence against political opponents? Convince the people they will be unquestionably justified in doing it for you. "I'll be on the right side of history! I cant possibly not be in the right, because I'm not those other people" is a hell of a drug. Road to hell, good intentions and all that.
