I guess tomatoes are kind of essential too That's a fucking melt, not a grilled cheese The one true thing that separates melts from grilled cheese sandwiches is fillings; when you think of melts, you think of sandwiches with substantiated fillings like hamburger patties or tuna. Bacon is essentially a "meat garnish"; in other words not a substantiated filling.
