It doesn't matter when they were created; what matters is that they're set in stone until an official change comes about. You can't just say "This is common, so it's automatically correct".

You might have a point if people are speaking Japanese when they say karaoke. If they are speaking English you most certainly don't.

English has more leniency because letters can be pronounced differently, but Everest is pronounced "eve-rest". Even though 99% of the world might pronounce it "ever-est", that doesn't change the fact that it was named after George Everest, whose name was pronounced "eve-rest".
