English has more leniency because letters can be pronounced differently, but Everest is pronounced "eve-rest". Even though 99% of the world might pronounce it "ever-est", that doesn't change the fact that it was named after George Everest, whose name was pronounced "eve-rest".


Wrong. If 99% of English speakers pronounce a term a specific way then that method of pronouncing that term is a correct way of prounounce that term. The origin of the term is irrelevant.
