If you save a couple, you can save 2 characters that hour (the two from the couple) If you split a couple, then you can only save 1 character that hour (one from the couple you just split, or one from a couple that another user split) If you split two couples, you can save 0 characters that hour. Or you can save up to 2 characters per hour that were already split-off.
