You have a lot of room to screw up. A lot of time for computers to make corrections, for pilots to make corrections, and to recover from danger or make adjustments necessary for safe heading or landing. Part of qualifying for a pilot's license involves taking a plane really high in the air and intentionally stalling her out to prove you can safely recover control of the aircraft. At 50MPH ON THE GROUND where you are surrounded by metal and ground and trees and people and other cars and concrete etc. you have a matter of half a second before you die for some mistakes.
