yes they had a backdoor pilot called blood lines
it failed for multiple reasons

for one it was focused on brand new characters no one was interested in
it was a copy of the show the originals
and it was a horribly cliched plotline

where as this backdoor pilot not only looks good they are actually putting the focus on fan favorite characters that people want to see more of rather than on complete nobodies no one cares about.

last time they did everything wrong when trying to make a spin off
this time they are doing everything right
it also doesnt hurt that thanks to the arrowverse they know how popular annual cross over events can be so now supernatural can have their own cross over super events
