You could have done the same thing by having Finn meet other Resistance members and talking to them about what they think they should do, trying to get them to follow Poe's plan. Hell, have him travel between other ships within that group of Resistance Ships. You could introduce the hacker as someone left behind in one of the trailing ships, since he was a criminal or some shit.


The only reason they had to move the plot to space Abu Dhabi was because it's a Star Wars movie, a series in which every movie visits no fewer than two different exotic worlds. While I agree that the movie would have been much better served to keep the plot contained on the ship, the crowd not currently complaining about TLJ would have come out of the woodwork to complain about how it didn't feel like a Star Wars movie without meeting a planet-hopping quota.
