There's definitely a strong female lead who wants to do things she's not supposed to be allowed to do in 19th century culture. For fantasy, I like to suggest a rather controversial and unknown series. The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R Donaldson. The main character starts off very dark and bitter, does something absolutely horrible near the beginning of the story, and is never your regular good guy. --- `Twas brillig, and the slithy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, and the mome raths outgrabe. ...
