The main reason people recommend the bow over the bowguns is the fact that you don't have to manage so much different ammunition or keep your reserves up. In terms of actually using the weapon, the bow is much more particular.

That is true. You only need to keep in the 4 coatings your Bow has access to as opposed to the 10-15 ammo types your bowgun can use. When you first try the Bowgun, its status screen will overwhelm you with info. But determining what bullets you should use is the first and only difficult part of the bowguns.

But range affecting damage made Mr never touch it.

Look at it this way, the critical distance you speak of is implemented to simulate real life. A shooting an arrow point blank won't be as powerful as an arrow that is several meters away because the arrow needs a bit of time to accelerate to its maximum speed. Conversely if you shoot a gun or arrow, they will slow down in speed due to wind resistance. And it helps that it prevents you from standing from across the field and sniping the monster from a distance. It's not a big issue to worry about, and World makes it 100x easier than the previous games by telling you when you're in critical distance.
