Staple doesn't mean a main. It means one of the major threats he's faced, and eventually an anti-hero. The movies are not comics and he did perfectly fine in the TAS and probably one of the best parts of the series, if you're going to other media to compare to how he would be in the movies. While we're at it, I think Spectacular Spider-Man did a great job too and they had Venom show up while Peter is still in high school. That was based on the Ultimate universe where Peter and Eddie were childhood friends whose fathers worked together. I always did like that touch since it made them even more of a.....I can't think of the word right now....juxtaposition? No that's not it.
