The game is dramatically different depending on your weapon choice.
Katana.
Used that sword/axe crap but it was terrible
The switch axe has been my main weapon through the whole game, it's awesome. I'm currently at the final monsters.
I don't have any experience with the long sword, but it is the most used weapon by a lot. If you think it's too slow, try sword and shield, dual blades, bow, or glaive (although it's a bit more complicated). I've also heard hammer is pretty fast when used right.
But ALL weapons are viable, so don't stress too much about it.
