I presume its based on Karl Marx's historical dialectic and description of the evolution of economic systems.

I might be wrong. Given my extensive, but now sorta of dated, knowledge of political theory, it makes sense to me. But I've been out of the loop on trending theories for around 7 years since end grad school.
