Some restaurants split the tip with the kitchen. I've been unlucky enough to work at restaurants that don't split the tip. But for one of the occasions where we had a large take out order, a bartender came back to tip the kitchen. That was sweet of him. But why though? I mean the cooks actually get paid a proper amount of money, the servers almost always never do, and have to make it up with tips. Servers' earning potential with tips are astronomically higher than cooks.
