Randi, I know this isn't exactly what you want to hear right now, but if he's not able or willing to get over himself, his issues, and his baggage to be with you you're better off with him having been straightforward about it early on rather than stringing you along for days weeks and months. It would only have gotten worse for the both of you as he buckled under his own issues down the line. I've been on both sides of this sort of thing and it only gets worse with the sheer force of momentum.

When I was in his position, I'd strung a girl on for 4 years on and off and it was totally unfair to her. When I was on your end, the girl would take off to Florida without so much as an explanation or goodbye everytime things got too real for her and then she'd pop pack up like nothing ever happened and expect me to drop everything and I did for the first two years of that dance.

Neither situation had a happy resolution for anyone involved. I know it doesn't seem like it now, but the takeaway here is that it's for the better that he was straight up about where he's at before things got too deep for him to handle.
