Blame the person, not the day.

It's commercialized so the day should be blamed.

All holidays are. That means next to nothing.

Commercialism leans heavily on marketing and advertising. Advertisements are nothing more than suggestions. Sales pitches. Some are more effective than others at being enticing, but at the end of the day the consumer has a choice in making a purchase.

People still have a choice In whom they date, and they have a choice in whether theyre going to expect gifts or to have a lot of money spent on them. If youre dating someone with overwhelming or unrealistic expectations, and they wont have a conversation with you about it to come into agreement on what holidays mean to you (and your budget), then youre likely involved with the wrong sort of person, and youre better off finding someone better suited to you.

The artificial demand that has been introduced by commercilalizing everything is still artificial as long as you find a like-minded partner. This is why open communication is vital to a healthy relationship. Stuff like this should be discussed, and even when youre in love with someone you have to know where youre willing to make compromise, and have the wisdom to know when its better to end a relationship, even a good one, rather than have something be a thorn in your side for a needlessly prolonged time.
