I mean there's a lot of superficial, self absorbed gay men, which makes the sweet guys stand out more. And most of my priorities in a man are shown more often in the latter. So I've dated plenty of people for reasons besides their looks because they had other traits that made them still appealing to be with. I've even gotten romantically possessive of some of my plain looking exes. Like I had an ex who was just a regular looking skinny guy with barely any muscle on him, but I was damn proud of saying his ass was my property in the lover's sense. He treated me right and went the extra mile to be romantic. I liked that and casually made it clear he was my man just like when my friends bragged about reeling in some mega hunk. And even as satisfying as it was being with him, my shallow friends couldn't grasp how I could be that content with a regular looking guy who was just really affectionate. They were so wrapped up in hunting down 10/10 guys for one nighters that they didn't see any value in trying to have a relationship with a sweet average Joe.
