My former school has them, as does every other school in the area. They also have (unarmed) security guards walking around. Because a metal detector alone is going to stop a guy with a gun. It will go off, he'll realize guns aren't allowed, and then he'll go home. It's a deterrent, at the very least. And it's better than nothing. It's also a far more sensible solution than the idiotic concept of banning guns. I had a metal detector at college.
