Even if the FBI had more thoroughly investigated the tip it got, its unlikely that that investigation would have enough evidence to take action under Floridas civil commitment laws. Without clear evidence of an immediate threat to commit violence, there was simply no basis (under Floridas civil laws, which are admittedly some of the weakest in the nation in this regard) to detain Nikolas Cruz for a mental health examination. And Floridas firearm laws make it impossible to take a firearm away from someone who has not yet actually committed a crime.

And I do not support laws that make it easier to deny a person their freedom on the allegation of that theyre mentally ill. Ive seen these laws abused far too many times. The solution to this issue is not to be found in giving the police more power to restrict peoples freedom.
