44. Umineko no Naku Koro ni (Drakeryn)
6jVuIgr

That Red Truth sums up the struggle of Umineko fairly well, and since Beato said it in red, there's no reason to doubt it! First of all, I'm not going to indulge this whole "does this count as a game or not?" debate because it's dumb and I don't care. Anyway, Umineko is difficult to talk about without delving into spoilers, but I'll do my best. There are eight episodes, and they mostly tell the same murder mystery story each time with different details. It's a little more complicated than that in practice, especially with the last couple of episodes, but that's the gist. The first four episodes are called the Question Arc, and the last four episodes are called the Answer arc. As you could probably deduce, the first half presents you with all of the relevant facts, and the second half helps you piece it all together, although it rarely gives you the answer outright to the major plot points. It was fun trying to look for all the hints and clues that were fairly obvious on hindsight on my second time through the game.

However, on my first run through Umineko, I wasn't actively trying to solve the mystery at all. I was in it for the roller coaster thrill ride, with crazy twists and turns, trying to figure out who dies and who will survive, rooting for the heroes to beat the witch. They'd have crazy magic battle sequences, but I wasn't thinking, "Oh, I wonder how much of this is real," while I was watching it. I was just taking in the spectacle. Umineko is great at getting your hopes up and then punching you right in the gut at the exact moment when it would be most painful. Episode 4 in particular had the biggest one for me. That episode is kind of odd. The first half of it might be the worst stretch in the series, while the second half might be the best stretch. In general, Episodes 3-6 are my favorites, although they're all mostly good. Unfortunately, Episode 8 didn't stick the landing very well, so I think it left a sour taste in a lot of people's mouths. I think that's probably part of the reason it's not remembered as fondly as perhaps it otherwise might, because while the series was still in progress, Umineko was beloved and had a rabbid following on the board. Of course, when you're dealing with something as plot-intensive as this, a bad ending can largely ruin the overall experience, so it's understandable.

No discussion about Umineko would be complete without mentioning the music. It's got one of the best soundtracks you'll find in anything anywhere. Whether you want something fast-paced and intense or something slower and filled with emotion (and nearly everything in between), it's got it all. The most popular heavy-hitters (like worldenddominator, dreamenddischarger, discolor, Hope, etc.) need no introduction, especially if you're into the VGMC, since Umineko has dominated that contest over the years. Every episode has at least one retired track. As far as my personal favorites go, I'm a big fan of Black Liliana, Thanks for Being Born, Mortal Stampede, ruriair, Rain, and many others. Honestly, I'd recommend playing the game to hear those songs instead of listening to them on their own because the context totally matters and enhances my enjoyment of them.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Umineko episode?
