An off-duty police officer is expected to live after shooting himself in the chest during a heated argument with his girlfriend possibly about breaking up Saturday in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, sources said.

The couple were inside a silver Honda Accord that stopped suddenly in the middle of the street near Wythe Avenue and Williamsburg Street West when the conversation took a violent turn just after 11 a.m., police sources said.

I heard the noise, the police, said Ian Jove, who lives nearby. The paramedics [took] him out. He looked bad.

The officer, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, appeared to be unconscious, Jove recalled.

The woman in the car appeared worried, he added.

The couple may have been talking about ending their relationship, police sources said.

The officer, who works at the 94th Precinct and was not immediately identified, shot himself near the heart, and was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital where he underwent surgery. He is expected to survive, sources said.

A crowd of at least 10 police officers stood alongside the Accord (above), peering inside and shaking their heads, as another group of officers stood nearby.

The officer is the third NYPD cop so far this year to either commit or attempt suicide.

Last week, a detective shot and killed himself at an upstate bar.

Nicholas Budney, 36, who worked in emergency services in The Bronx, was found with a gunshot wound to the head outside Billy Joes Ribworks, his body laying on an outdoor deck.

In January, an NYPD sergeant was found dead in Staten Island.

Sgt. Joseph Pizzarro, 35, a 15-year police veteran, had apparently shot himself in the head at the Hilton Garden Inn.

In December, retired Capt. Douglas Greenwood, who struggled with 9/11-related lung disease after serving as a commanding officer at Ground Zero, fatally shot himself at his Long Island home.

Man being a cop in New York must be hard. The abuse you must deal with every day would be near intolerable... And then if you just come home in your personal life to more abuse.... I can see why that might be overwhelming.
