Anyone with even the most basic secondary science education should be able to recall 1.6 km/mi less than a decade out of school. Especially where metric distances come up quite often even outside of school. It doesn't actually come up that much. At least to the point where you need to convert it. Unless you work in a field that needs to do that often. And most people probably don't. Also, it actually didn't get brought up much in school after elementary.
