I think the argument can be made an AR-15 is an assault weapon, considering, well, 'recent events'

Assault weapon vs assault rifle. They're two fundamentally different things.

Yes, and most people wanting stricter gun control laws like myself are wanting an assault weapons ban

There are dozens if not a hundred or more rifles that you can purchase that are functionally equivalent to an AR-15. The reason why I will continue to oppose an "assault weapons" ban or an AR-15 ban is because it allows people ban weapons based on nothing.

If someone tried to craft a piece of legislation to ban the AR-15 and they actually based their legislation on its ballistic capabilities, this would ban a lot of different weapons and would be extremely unpopular. I think some people on the left actually understand this. So instead they plan to slowly chisel away at gun rights by going after the AR-15 or specific models. Once they're successful with that, maybe a mass shooter in the future will use a mini 14 which would be functionally equivalent to an AR-15 for the purposes of a mass shooting. So then they'll attack that next, and this time they'll have the precedent of the AR-15 ban on their side.
