We need it because we may need to fight the government some day. At the very least having is a deterrent from the government. The government has military drones, long range missiles, smart bombs, fighter planes, etc. your AR-15 wouldnt do much good then. We have all of this and we still can't beat a bunch of insurgents with cheap rifles, IEDs and trucks.
