Inglorious Basterds

Rating: 97/100

Another movie where the details make the film great. Of course I could rave about how the methodical pace of Hans Landa's character makes him a delightful villain, or why the variations on how to motion the number three make this film so great, but I want to focus on something no one ever mentions: the comedic timing of B.J. Novak. The one Basterd to survive, Novak's character has like two lines in the whole movie, and yet Tarantino went out and co-opted a great dry comedian to nail those lines. And the result is that the last scene is able to turn something gruesome into something hilarious. And so much of this movie plays up a strange perverse lightness in the face of truly dark and terrible scenes. It's a damn good movie.
