It's so glacially paced and dull, and the rest of Jack's family is completely boring. The entire plot just doesn't really feel like there's much to it. I'm also not really a Kubrick guy in general (I think Barry Lyndon is probably my favorite Kubrick film, if that gives any indication of what I think of him). See, I get where you're coming from. I will admit that The Shining is basically a collection of incidents that happen to the family and the story revolves around how they react to them, in similar fashion to how much of 2001: A Space Odyssey is just shots of spaceships showing mankind's technological progress. Fine. It's probably the filmmaking that's a big part of why a lot of us like the film so much.
