Can't look into them yet, but I know Donald applied with the FEC to be a candidate last year on the day of his inauguration. I think this is over a year earlier than the next earliest reelection bid too -- Obama in about April 2011. Is the advantage here campaign funding (in a way he wasn't already getting from the FEC as mentioned above), shutting down primary challengers, dominating the news cycle, show of strength...?
