Oh, since you haven't ever gotten very far in the game, I don't want to give away too much. I'll spoiler mark a few things and you can read at your own risk (they aren't really "plot" spoilers, but just stuff that might ruin the surprise).

- Get animals as soon as possible, their products are worth a lot more than crops.
- Save a few of each crop if you don't need to sell stuff right away, since later you can make more seeds from it or use it in recipes
- Do the community center bundles ASAP. I find the greenhouse, minecarts and bus repair to especially be useful.
- Don't worry too much about getting far in the mines right away, beyond getting ore to upgrade essential tools (hoe and watering can don't really need upgrades). You'll have a lot more time to explore them in winter.
- Some fish can only be caught at certain times: a specific season, specific time of day, and when it's raining.
- If you don't know what to gift somebody, people generally like most of the meals that you can cook.
- Give somebody a good gift on their birthday if you want to increase friendship level more.
- Use crappy fish, such as those found on the beach or in crab pots to make fertilizer.
- (later in game) Use sheds to house machines like kegs, preserve jars, mayonnaise, cheese, etc.
