Still use them though. Two things stand out to me from driver's ed but a lot of people don't understand. 1) The merging lane is to get up to speed for the freeway/highway whatever. Don't go snail pace (unless it actually is snail pace). 2) Signals are to signal you want to move...before you move. Some people are dicks and won't let you in if you signal.
