It indicates a bit of insecurity because things like this aren't written to make people more manly. They're written to convince people who already do these things that they truly are manly and that society isn't passing them by, even when in some ways it is. It bashes people for wearing skinny jeans and shaving their chest, but some of those men are doing that because it makes them more appealing to women.
