No there wasn't. Assault rifles are already banned by amendments to the National Firearms Act, which dates back to the 30s. You're thinking of the bullshit "Assault Weapons" ban. Which created a poorly defined term and just banned things Sara Brady thought were scary. And statistically, it was of marginal effect.
